This course will help in developing the students' skills and knowledge in creating digital files for graphic design projects using Adobe Illustrator. As the graphic design industry changes through the development, advancement and integration of computer technology, the importance of learning Adobe Illustrator for the design and production of digital files becomes evident. This course will develop the student’s design and image creation skills using Adobe Photoshop. The student will be able to source images, create, develop, and assess various design solutions and execute projects in a professional manner. Software required: Adobe Photoshop CC No textbook required.

This course will further develop the student’s image correction and restoration skills using Adobe Photoshop. The student will be able to restore black and white images using Adobe Photoshop tools and gain skills in image correction by using, blurring, adjustment layer, layer masks and liquifying techniques. This course will allow students to read selected Canadian literature, including novels and short stories, and to analyse and discuss various key points of each piece of literature. Students will identify the different types of audiences intended for each literary piece.  Some suggested areas of study for each novel will include selected key literary terms as well as discussion of the relevance of setting and plot in relation to Canadian culture and history, found in each individual piece. This course will focus on both reading literature as well as the use of proper written English.  The novels chosen will also be explored in relation to their relevance to Canadian culture.  Key literary terms and events will be discussed for each novel, including questions for each literary piece. Core elements needed for creative writing are covered. Students gain an understanding of the process of creative writing including theme, setting, plotting, characterization and the use of dialogue, enabling them to successfully discover their writer's voice and build confidence in their writing abilities. Textbook Required.

Creating poetic lyrics suitable for the profession of songwriting student will learn a variety of genres to direct their talents. Special consideration for the purpose of presentation to music producers and agents will be discussed. No textbook required.

This course will analyze the sociological aspects of popular music from the 20th century to the mainstream music of today. It will emphasize important trends, genres, labels and individuals in music history. Special attention will be given to Canadian experiences in popular music. Textbook Required. 

Science fiction addresses key concerns that are not restricted to the imaginative worlds depicted in fiction; rather, science fiction uses alien settings, strange worlds, alternate timelines, or virtual environments as a way of exploring contemporary issues. Over the course of exploring the various issues contained in these fictions, science fiction’s various movements will be explored to provide a broader sense of the genre's development from its earliest to its most current forms; in addition, terminology will be introduced so, by the end of the course, students will have a broader understanding of science fiction's historical and thematic terrain. Recommended Pre-requisite: College english or equivalent. Textbook required.

Students become familiar with the tools necessary to appreciate literature critically by reviewing literary history and examining different genres. Themes and conventions associated with these genres are explored and an understanding of literary analysis and various critical approaches is developed. This class will explore the film genre of Westerns. Major themes, theories and ideas will be examined via the work of selected actors, directors and films. Subjects to be studied via discussion and assignments include The History of the Western / Components of the Western / Landscape and Setting / Actors / Directors / Films / Indigenous Peoples. The course will conclude with an analysis of the place of the Western in a contemporary context - can it still sit tall in the saddle? Textbook Optional.
